As Pokemon Scarlet & Violet wind down to a close, it’s time to look ahead to the future of the franchise and speculate if a new Pokemon game coming in 2024.

It feels like there is always something Pokemon-related on the horizon. There’s so much to do with the live service tactics of Pokemon Go, the regular release schedule of the Pokemon TCG, or the long life of mainline titles like Pokemon Scarlet & Violet thanks to Tera Raids, Outbreaks, and Shiny collecting.

But right now, looking ahead to 2024 the future of Pokemon is unclear, as Pokemon Scarlet & Violet seem to be over thanks to the recent, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Epilogue.

Will a new Pokemon game come out in 2024?

At the time of writing, there are no public plans to release a Pokemon game in 2024. However, Game Freak and The Pokemon Company usually keep up a frequent release schedule, so it would be very surprising if there were no new Pokemon games in 2024 overall.

Plus, The Pokemon Company and Game Freak usually like to have one Pokemon game released every single year. Though Pokemon Scarlet & Violet have only just wrapped up, so for many fans it feels too early to consider the next generation.

While 2023 saw the release of the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet DLC, both DLC and previous “third versions” of games are usually handed over to junior staff while the main team works on the next big release. Meanwhile, titles like Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were outsourced to different devs.

Looking back at 2023, it consisted of Detective Pikachu Returns, Pokemon Sleep, and Pokemon Scarlet & Violet DLC. So it is safe to assume at least one Pokemon game is coming in 2024, and optimistically, it may be a mainline game along the lines of Pokemon Legends Arceus, or Black and White remakes.

Another thing to consider is that multiple reports are suggesting Nintendo may release new hardware in 2024. If this does happen, it’s very likely The Pokemon Company will want a Pokemon game on the platform within the first six months. But this is strictly speculation.
